A surviving Tower corn/flour Mill dating from 1816 located in a small public garden aside a residential estate.
Restored, maintained and operated by enthusiasts with pre-arranged guided tours available of this historic building.
Grade II Listed remnant (the supplementary outbuildings long demolished) boasting a boat-shaped clad cap floating above the sturdy tapered supporting tower anchored in a setting that commands the surrounding topography.
Dimensions, design and locale convey a composure and composition that’s both contemporary and timeless.
Hands up for this one.
The first time I'd seen the Brixton windmill correctly. However, there is also an education center nearby that would tell you about it; I would thoroughly advise visiting. There is a lot of history to collate from there.
An amazing community initiative. Lovely bunch of locals running the efforts voluntarily.
The flour, jams, merchandise up for sale but you should definitely try and catch the guided tour of the mill!
It is so amazing to see a windmill still standing in London. Brixton windmill still produces flour a couple of days a week. If you want to visit you need to check their website as it can be only visited during open days or arranging a private tour for a group.
Hidden gem in Brixton. I did the short tour after an heritage walk around Brixton.
You can turn up without booking for the short tour (it is free), which is only for the ground floor and 1st floor of the mill. However, as it wasn't too busy, our guide took us up to the 2nd floor.
There are 5 floors in total.
For the longer tour, it's best to book in advance. The places fill quickly as they can only accommodate a maximum of 5/6 people at any one time.
Lovely place, surrounded by a small park with a shop onsite selling milled wholemeal flour, tote bags, badges, books and, other memorabilia.
There is also a small cafe and a public toilet.
A must visit!
An amazing tucked away in the most unexpected location. It is surrounded by a small green with a play area for children. You are able to go inside the windmill. But if you want a full tour of ALL floors, then you will need to pre-book free a space on their webpage. You are also able to buy flour produced at the mill. Currently (July 2018) the sails have been taken off to repair ,but should be back on and running soon. So might be worth calling to check if the sails are back, if you want to see it complete.
Really interesting guided tour to the top of the Mill. Very steep steps going up to the different floors which made me admire the old Millers more - I only had to climb and ascend once! The shop has some excellent gifts at good prices to remind you of a good visit and friendly staff. Looking forward to a return visit already as there are extra events through the year.
Another review where I’d like to give 3.5 stars. Hopefully Google can implement soon.
Good
I really liked the Windmill tour. The volunteers were extremely friendly and the tour itself was informative. I wasn’t able to book a long tour but even the short tour was about 20 mins long (versus the long one being around 35 mins). Arrived a tad early and the ladies in the café were extremely nice.
Not so good
The park itself was quite dirty and even the tour guide apologised since there is works happening. There also isn’t anything else to see beyond the windmill itself. A bit far so I don’t know if I’d travel from central London all the way to Brixton just for this.
Perhaps there are more things happening at other times of the year?
